Fast, Fun, and Simple Quilts
Even though I’ve been quilting for 15+ years, there still comes a time when I need to make quilts that don’t require a lot of time. I like to call those quilts my fast, fun and simple quilts. . .they are precisely that! They don’t need to have intricate piecing or use a lot of different fabrics. Sometimes there are times when I only have 2 or 3 coordinating fabrics and think ‘Now what kind of simple quilt pattern could I make?’
Below is a quilt (40” x 50”) I’ve constructed several times to give as baby gifts because they sew up practically on their own. I like to call this quilt my “Pink Ladies” quilt.
So, to get started, for the top select 3 coordinating fabrics from your fabric stash or take a trip to your favorite quilt store. As quilters we always like to buy fabric, right? You will need 1 yard of the main focus print, 2/3 yard for the border and 1/3 yard for the binding. After sewing the quilt top, you will need an additional 1 ½ yards for the backing and batt. I like to use a 4 oz ( 48” wide) polyester batting for most of my baby quilts. It makes the quilt cuddly and soft to the touch. If you like to use a flat batting, try a Hobbs 80/20 batting. It’s lighter and not as stiff compared to using 100% cotton batting.
Now, for the finishing touch. . . choose a quilting pattern to compliment the fabrics you’ve selected. Does it need stars, flowers, swirls or just a meandering pattern? Let the fabrics tell the story!
